Australia’s peak body representing copyright users and innovators in a digital world

Righting the copyright imbalance

The internet has profoundly changed the way we access, share and create content. It enables widespread access to knowledge, new opportunities for community participation and fosters digital innovation.

The internet age challenges our copyright framework as the chief means of regulating the creation, distribution and use of information. Balanced and flexible copyright laws are fundamental to the broad dissemination of knowledge, culture and education and to encourage innovation.

The Australian Digital Alliance is the peak body representing copyright users and innovators in Australia advocating for balanced copyright laws. Its mission is to promote a copyright law in Australia that is balanced and flexible, respects user rights, and encourages access and innovation in the public interest.

We believe

  • Copyright should strike a balance between the interests of the creator and public interest in access to knowledge, culture and education
  • Balanced copyright laws encourage community participation
  • Balanced copyright laws facilitate economic growth

We support

  • Transparent and consultative international IP negotiations
  • Flexible copyright exceptions that enable innovation
  • Fair and proportionate liability for copyright infringement
  • Equitable access to information for educators, libraries, cultural institutions and the wider community
  • Fair and proportionate incentives for creators

We oppose

  • Copyright laws that distort the balance between the interests of rights holders and broader public interest in access to knowledge
  • The use of technological or contractual measures to unfairly restrict access to content
