Job Opportunity: Copyright Officer
The Australian Digital Alliance and the Australian Libraries Copyright Committee are seeking a part-time Copyright Officer to assist their existing senior staff member. The role of the Copyright Officer will be to assist with the running of the two organisations, conduct training programs on copyright for the library and archives community, and contribute to copyright policy development and advocacy in Australia.
About the position
It's an exciting time to be in copyright law and policy, as governments worldwide consider how best to update copyright laws for the internet age. This is an opportunity for an enthusiastic, self-motivated candidate to develop or extend their expertise in digital copyright and access to information issues, and establish relationships with a range of stakeholders in Australia and overseas.
This is a unique and fast-paced role, with a diversity of opportunities available. We are seeking a self motivated and flexible individual who is willing to take on a variety of tasks as required to support the two organisations. Responsibilities include:
- running copyright training for librarians and archivists;
- writing informational materials on copyright (fact sheets, blog posts, newsletters, social media);
- legal research and analysis;
- assisting with the development and communication of advocacy positions and policy submissions on a range of copyright issues;
- assisting with the running of public events, including an annual conference; and
- assisting with the running of a small organisation, including administration and Board secretariat work.
Opportunities may arise for direct engagement with government departments, parliamentarians and stakeholders, or to participate in forums and conferences on copyright and related issues.
Salary range, time and location commitments
This is a part time position (0.6 FTE) located in Canberra at the National Library of Australia, with a salary range of FTE $65,000-$75,000. For the right candidate, flexible and remote work arrangements may be considered. The job involves travel. The initial term is 1 year, commencing August 2017.
Specific duties
- Delivery of copyright workshops and presentations to libraries and archives around Australia.
- Researching and writing papers, submissions and web based material on copyright and related issues on behalf of ADA and ALCC members.
- Providing regular updates to the membership of both organisations.
- Assisting with the coordination of public events, including the ADA's annual conference.
- Supporting Committee and Board meetings, public forums and stakeholder consultations.
- Assisting with the development and implementation of publicity activities relating to copyright issues, including social media and presentations at conferences and workshops.
- Assisting with the general management of the affairs of the ADA and ALCC.
Selection criteria
- Demonstrated understanding of, and capacity to develop expertise in copyright law. A completed law degree is a bonus.
- The ability to research, synthesise and write.
- Strong and confident communication skills - experience in developing and delivering training is a bonus.
- A demonstrated interest in the issues affecting copyright law advice and reform.
- Proficiency in word processing, website management and social media.
- The capacity to work autonomously and to develop systematic communication. This is important in maintaining information flows for the two organisations, and supporting their administrative operations.
- Willingness to travel.
